Q&A with FIREreads Cover Designer Nicole HowerWhat was the first step to designing the cover for Belle Révolte? We first research the space, pulling any and all comparison titles from the past couple of years along with anything that is forthcoming from other publishers. Once we have an idea of what the space looks like, we are able to get a sense of how we want to fit in or stand out on shelf. A cover direction board was then created to convey the tone and positioning in a visual format for the artist. What is the feeling you wanted the cover to evoke? From the start, we wanted this cover to feel French inspired with a juxtaposition of beauty and violence. This is a fantastical world inspired by French culture where there is war and magic. Did the cover design of Linsey's previous books affect the direction for Belle Révolte? The design decisions and direction for Belle Révolte were not influenced by her previous books. While they are both graphic in style, we really wanted to focus on creating a cover that spoke to this new story and was uninhibited by anything we have done in the past. Why pink? The pink is inspired by Versailles (another nod to French culture). We also thought this color choice worked well in being able to view the dripping liquid as either potion for the magic in the story or blood for the war. What was it like working with Billelis to execute the artwork? What drew you to his art style in particular? We were drawn to Billelis’s work since he had these amazing pieces in his portfolio that looked like they were made of metal with liquid dripping off them. These pieces conveyed the tone we were looking for perfectly (beauty and violence). He has also worked on several YA fantasy covers and we knew he would be perfect to execute the vision we had for the design. Learn More about Belle Révolte
